Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 1:19 PM PDT on August 29, 2008

... Well above normal temperatures to continue through Saturday
across the central California interior followed by strong cooling
beginning Sunday...

Strong high pressure will remain across central California
through Saturday. High temperatures will be around 10 degrees
above normal... but will stay a few degrees below record levels.
Today will be the warmest day... with highs between 103 and 109
degrees in the central and southern San Joaquin Valley and the
Kern County desert. Highs of 100 to 108 are likely in the
foothills of the southern Sierra Nevada including Yosemite
Valley... Oakhurst... Lake Isabella and Kings Canyon.

In addition... nighttime temperatures will be in the mid 70s in
the urban areas of Fresno and Bakersfield tonight.

A low pressure system will move into central California bringing
significant cooling beginning on Sunday. By Monday... temperatures
are expected to be 10 to 15 degrees cooler than Saturday. The low
pressure system also will bring gusty winds to the mountains and
deserts.

During periods of above normal heat... it is a good idea to check
on your elderly family and neighbors. People most sensitive to
the heat include children... elderly... and people with chronic
illness. Listen to NOAA Weather Radio... or your favorite news
source... for updates on this situation.
